Somaliland is a country in East Africa with well-defined borders. Historically, it was part of the territories that were once colonized by the British, known as British Somaliland. Somaliland gained its independence from the British Empire on June 26, 1960. Just four days later, it reunited with Somalia, which was then under Italian colonial rule, having gained independence on July 1, 1960. The political leaders of Somaliland at that time decided to merge with Somalia in hopes of creating a strong Somali state that could participate in global affairs. Unfortunately, Somaliland was not welcomed warmly by Somalia; instead, it was treated with disrespect and unfairness—an attitude unworthy of the love and patriotism that Somalis in Somaliland felt.
