What the World Knows About Somaliland

Somaliland is a country in East Africa with well-defined borders. Historically, it was part of the territories that were once colonized by the British, known as British Somaliland.

Somaliland gained its independence from the British Empire on June 26, 1960. Just four days later, it reunited with Somalia, which was then under Italian colonial rule, having gained independence on July 1, 1960. The political leaders of Somaliland at that time decided to merge with Somalia in hopes of creating a strong Somali state that could participate in global affairs.

Unfortunately, Somaliland was not welcomed warmly by Somalia; instead, it was treated with disrespect and unfairness—an attitude unworthy of the love and patriotism that Somalis in Somaliland felt. The people in Somaliland were proud and happy to be part of a unified Somalia. However, the nation was plagued with countless conflicts, and Somaliland faced brutal wars, displacement, and devastation.

In response to this upheaval, Somaliland declared its independence again on May 18, 1991. This declaration was made in the city of Berbera, the second-largest city in Somaliland and the regional capital of Togdheer. Since then, Somaliland has strived to rebuild and establish a modern state with a comprehensive political system.

Somaliland has successfully conducted peaceful elections, which have earned respect worldwide. These elections, including those for the presidency, parliament, and local councils, stand out as some of the most transparent and peaceful in Africa.

However, Somaliland still faces challenges, especially regarding the elections of the Guurti (the upper house of parliament), established in 1997. The goal of the Guurti was to help Somaliland consolidate its independence. Over time, the council has experienced many difficulties, and the current members are few. Somaliland now needs decisive actions and new strategies to organize and conduct elections for the Guurti, ensuring stability and democratic progress.
